The first winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, The Vivienne, passed away at the age of 32.

The Vivienne, otherwise known as James Lee Williams, served as the UK Drag Ambassador for Drag Race in 2015 and later went on to compete and win the first season of Drag Race UK. As part of her prize, she was awarded a six-episode series on WOW Presents Plus, The Vivienne Takes on Hollywood. She also appeared and placed third on Dancing On Ice in 2023 and appeared on stage in productions of The Wizard of Oz and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

In a statement posted to Instagram over the weekend, The Vivienne’s friend and publicist Simon Jones said, “It is with immense sadness that we let you know our beloved James Lee Williams — The Vivienne, has passed this weekend,” Jones wrote. “James was an incredibly loved, warm-hearted and amazing person.

“Their family are heartbroken at the loss of their son, brother and uncle. They are so proud of the wonderful things James achieved in their life and career. We will not be releasing any further details. We please ask that James’s family are given the time and privacy they now need to process and grieve.”

Social media over the weekend was flooded with tributes from The Vivienne’s extended drag family. In a post on Instagram, Crystal said, “RIP to this gorgeous, funny, inspiring person. I remember so clearly your confidence on set – nearly 10 years younger than me and just bursting with it. It was obvious to everyone you were going to do big things. I’m really glad to have known you.

Another UK queen, Cheryl, stated, “All I can say right now is THANK YOU to you. Thank you for being the most incredible friend, mentor and sister & most importantly keeping me in check. thank you for the incredible moments, milestones and memories. Every moment spent with you was truly electric and magical. Your legacy, love and light will shine on forever!”

Baga Chipz posted photos of the two together and said, “My beautiful boy. My James. Our Viv. You taught me the true meaning of sisterhood but more importantly you taught me how to do a cut crease. I’m sending all my love to your mama and family, me and the girls will always be there for them. I’m gonna bloody miss you friend.”

RuPaul’s Drag Race judge Michelle Visage shared a tribute of her own, posting photos of herself with the late star. “Heartbreaking,” she wrote. “I don’t know how to say how I feel. My darling @thevivienne_ we go back to when I started coming over here to the UK. You were always there, always laughing, always giving, always on point. Your laughter, your wit, your talent, your drag. I loved all of it but I loved your friendship most of all. You were a beacon to so many.”

The Vivienne will surely be missed. RIP.
