The U.S. market’s first all-electric minivan arrives in dealer showrooms soon, but it may be a little too expensive for the average American family. The all-new Volkswagen ID. Buzz features fun, retro styling, and a modern, functional interior, but with a base price of more than $60,000, its potential audience may be small.

According to industry news source Automotive News, the average price of a new minivan sold this past July was $46,722. Consumer Guide recently reviewed a very-well equipped 2024 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Premium S Appearance that listed for $62,405, representing, more or less, the upper strata of minivan luxury and pricing.

Trim Levels

Volkswagen has announced pricing for three ID. Buzz trim levels: Pro S, Pro S Plus, and 1st Edition. Starting at the aforementioned $62,405, the Pro S comes with a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive powertrain and 282 horsepower. The Pro S seats seven. The Pro S Plus is available with rear captains chairs (reducing seating capacity to six), and comes with a Harman Kardon-brand premium audio systems and 360-degree surround-view camera systems. The “Plus” comes with rear drive—for the same 282 horsepower as the Pro S—or dual-motor AWD, which raises power output to 335. Pro S Plus prices start at $65,045 with rear drive, and $69,545 with AWD.

The First Edition starts at $67,045 with rear-wheel-drive, and $71,545 with AWD. Among the additional features found on the 1st Edition are model-exclusive 20-inch wheels.

Competition

Americans snapped up roughly 165,000 minivans in 2023. We’re not convinced that, given the price of entry, many traditional minivan shoppers will be swayed away from their Chrysler Pacificas, Honda Odysseys, Kia Carnivals, or Toyota Siennas by the pricey ID. Buzz. More likely the new VW EV will find favor with the gotta-have-it-first crowd. For sustained sales, the Buzz will need to be offered in lower trim levels priced more in line with conventional vans.

The ID. Buzz will arrive in U.S. Volkswagen showrooms later this year.
